I would counter the first review to this story, calling the characters ugly. No. What they are is more realistic, drawn in a way that fits to the genre and doesn't draw attention to idealistic beauty. The figures have a human aspect to them that doesn't make them sexy or handsome or even really pretty, but this gives a realism to the slice-of-life story being told. They wouldn't have looked right drawn as pretty people from superhero comics, with their dramatic poses, the awkwardity and not-so-pretty features of the characters adds to the real-life drama that The Road to God Knows Where tells. Frequently the characters do look a bit zombie-like, though. The biggest artistic downfall is the artist's evident inability to draw more than two expressions. They seem to either have their mouths open, or they don't. The inking, on the other hand, is lovely. If you're looking for a nice looking black and white comic, this is definately one to look at. The shading is well done, and the people aren't stereotypically pretty, as in most comics. They have realism to them, rather than the female main character being Busty McBoobs. The main character's a tomboy who likes wrestling and though she's not pretty to look at, she has a strong sense of realism to her that any girl who liked boyish things and was fat as a kid can sympathize with. It's nice to see a female main character like her. The pages are nicely laid out and the story will appeal to anyone who enjoys real life drama. It's not funny, it's not fantasy, it's just some teenagers and their life. It's very realistically done, both in story and in art, though the art does have its downfalls. Of course, the art has it's positives too, with gorgeous use of layout and ink. With that in mind, it's also slow moving and not necessarily very exciting. Though targetted for a niche audience, it does what it does quite well. If you like this sort of thing--teenager dealing with life's problems and not being 'like everyone else', you'll probably like this. It does what it does very well. I'm more into the fantasy adventure stories, but my sister would've loved it. She was the one who read the cancer survivor stories and teenage dramas, dealing with life instead of 9 foot tall monsters... monsters on the mental scale. If you liked those sort of books, this graphic novel is worth the read.

Hrmm... I can respect the effort and the storyplot of these comics... but good gravy those are some ugly people. While the story is interesting in its down-toned way, the characters are consistantly drawn in ackward poses with their mouths hanging open. Honestly, you could replace the words with "Guuuuuh..." and I'd think they're zombies.
