What's there to say? The only saving point of this comic is the art and the writing. Which seams like it should be perfectly fine... right? After all, a comic is all about the art and the writing... right?
Wrong!
Enter Spying with Lana. Spying with Lana is a super-sexy spy comic with a fun take on art. It's pencilled with a single color thrown in: red. The art's great and really, if they just got up and inked it, it'd be perfect. It's really tight pencils and ink would pop it out even more. The art is strong, sexy, and tells the story well. Above all, it's interesting, considering it's almost completely black and white, except for some red clothing.
The writing, eh, it's nothing outstanding but it works.
And then it goes all wrong.
The webpage. If this comic had a good site, it'd get another point from me. But it has no navigational structure at all. The comic is literally all on one page. I hunted for navigation buttons, no dice. Each page should be on its own page, with next and previous buttons. There's no. There's no archive. It's a long wall of comic with an ad slapped at the bottom and the vote buttons. Did I mention there's a huuuuge banner on top? ComicPress or any other webcomic automation system would serve this comic well. Anyone who reads webcomics will come in and search for the next button--only to find out that there is none. And frankly, that turns me off. If it updates every Monday, then I want to be able to bookmark the main page and come back every Monday to see a new page... not a slowly growing wall of pages.
It's not a bad comic. Nice art, the writing works... there's not enough here to really judge the writing. It works. It's a little bit Charlie's Angels without the other Angels, but it works. Not really appropriate for kids.
My only real beef with the art is this. She has no nipples. I assume this is to keep the 13+ rating but with that strong of an implication of sex and porn, I'm not sure why the artist and writer is bothering to censor. Just draw her nipples and make it M rated already. If it's going to keep going tihs way, you're only hurting the story by censoring it.
Nipples.
Women have them.
But seriously. Writing works for the comic, the art works for the comic, slapstick sort of humor works well for the comic--crisp pencils and color used to make it jump right out--bad site...
And weirdly censored. She's drawn with no nipples. There's no language. Come on, in a comic with a main character with boobs about the size of her head, who goes undercover in a porno for a mission, the characters ought to swear and she ought to have nipples. Seriously. Gratituous boob and butt shots... at least let your characters say 'hell' once in a while. Heck? Seriously? In a PG-13 rated comic about a kickass spy with huge breasts? It's very jarring.
Is it worth reading? Sure, if you like sexy women with boobs about the size of their head running around and kicking ass, by all means! It's well drawn, it's interesting so far, it should serve to get better. And as long as the site doesn't bother you, great! It bugs me, a lot. There's a webcomic convention for site navigation. It's used because it works.
Overly censored, considering the content? Maybe just a little...
If the plot's your thing, check it out. If you like the art style (American comic style pencils with a single color), check it out. If you like comics about girls who kick ass and have breasts the size of their heads? Check it out! You may have discovered a gem.
