Please take some time to check out the random webcomic of the current page load! PLEASE BE AWARE OF HEAVY CONSTRUCTION!
On Writing: The jokes and mini story arcs have a decidedly pop culture bent. This would typically be an issue if you're anything like me and pay little to no attention to what's happening in the outside world or in the entertainment media. However, creator Robert Chandler has an inviting writing style that is neither condescending or elitist, and you can pick up on the humor without necessarily being in the current events loop. The jokes can start to border on the cliche, but the majority of the time, the humor and writing are top notch and refreshingly different.
On Art: I'm Not Bob has a simplistic and cartoony style that the artist has stuck to faithfully. Readers will see improvements in the artwork from the beginning which result in sharper, cleaner lines and more consistent character features. The black and white style works for the comic, but ultimately, I'm Not Bob would benefit from full-color. Alternatively, a greyscale toning method would add more depth and make the artwork feel less coloring-book-y.
On Website: The site is streamlined, easy to navigate, and (thankfully) not overrun with ads. The downside here is that the design seems a bit template-y and plain. As long as I'm Not Bob remains a black and white comic, the site should offer more color to really make the actual comic pop. Perhaps a background color matching that of the header image (which I really like, by the by) would be a good addition without overcrowding or drowning out the other page elements.
Overall: I'm Not Bob is worth your time as a reader. There are many strips you'll read and find yourself saying, "Oh my goodness! Yes! I completely agree!" It's witty and clever and easy on the eyes. While some of the topics have a clear target audience, there is a little something for everyone. To top off your experience, Robert and his wife are among the friendliest and most interactive comickers out there - you'll be glad to make their acquaintance! If half marks were available, I'd rate a 3.5 (with color it would be an easy 4), but I'm going to round up to 4 anyway as this is a relatively young comic with bushels of promise. Take some time to read it - you'll be glad you did!
