Please take some time to check out the random webcomic of the current page load! PLEASE BE AWARE OF HEAVY CONSTRUCTION!
On Writing: Starship Moonhawk is a futuristic space drama with a fast pace and plenty of crisp dialogue to keep you reading. It has a very "blockbuster film" feel with each scene divided as it would be in a cinematic presentation. The author updates at a frantic pace, a goal of five pages a week. Obviously this works in favor of the webcomic format, giving readers something to chew on with each page. The downside is that there's little time spent on scenes that could use more establishing shots or shots of actions. The story holds up, but it is a bit saddening that with the extensive effort that has gone into establishing the various locations in Starship Moonhawk that we don't get more shots to simply show off the way things look. Everything is focused on advancing the plot as tightly as it can.
On Art: The artwork is a mix of styles taking from western and eastern inspirations. Although the pacing is very American comics in feel, there is an extensive use of symbols found in manga like vein marks for anger or lines on the cheeks to indicate a blush. The artwork does have a cartoonish feel overall, which may be off-putting to the uninitiated. The characters have large heads and their expressions are often over the top. That said, the art does have emotion and the feeling behind it that many comics lack. Loving care goes into every detail, and each area is constructed to look distinct and recognizable. The posture and personality of each character comes through clearly.
On Website: The website runs on ComicPress which is pretty standard fare for webcomics. The navigation buttons can be hard to find until you learn to remember where they are, and the archive is in calendar format so finding a specific page can be hard. The site isn't an eyesore though, and the comic is displayed prominently and in a readable fashion.
Overall: Starship Moonhawk is a webcomic with a long history of rewrites and do-overs, but the creator is finally buckling in and going for it in a pre-planned and consistent manner. If you've never checked out the site this is the best time to do so. It has frequent updates, a fast-paced story, a cast of interesting characters, and a well-conceived sci-fi universe.
