On Writing: Jamie is consistently entertaining with this somewhat whimsical dramatic romp. Is it a romance story? Is it a buddy comedy? Not entirely sure, but has some shades of both. Princess Lavender has an unusual maid in Felicia largely because Felicia harbors a terrible secret. What sets this apart from most is the unusual strata she caters to. Maid boy? Well, if this is a widely-known genre, then color me surprised. What makes it refreshing is that it is not simply pandering to a sexual fetish, yet at the same time, the gender-bending adds a boatload of hilarity to this light fantasy tale.
On Art:Jamie's art is what attracted me to her work. It has evolved a lot since her humble beginnings on the web almost seven years ago. Lavender Legend is no exception. Her combination of old and new techniques gives Lavender Legend a unique charm absent from many webcomics. While clearly manga influenced, her pages are bold and dramatic, but never lose sight of the most important aspect of the series: the characters.
On Website:It's a webcomic page. As such, there's not a lot of room for innovation as folks are here for one purpose, and only one purpose. And that is to read comics. Having said that, Jamie's design skills are apparent in this simply, yet effective layout that is immediately accessible to both web experts and novices alike. the lace borders and color scheme are a nice compliment to an already great comic.
Overall:Overall, I give Lavender Legend high marks. It's not Lloyd Alexander, but it doesn't need to be. It's a thoroughly enjoyable fantasy tale about a guy (who dresses as a girl) and a girl (who may or may not love him), and the sparks that fly when they interact. Is it a love story? Will it remain a lighthearted comedy? Only time will tell.
